Weekly Update (Mar 31st) Finally - Hero Upgrades & Builder Base News

Town Hall Level 12 - Week 11

Trophies : 2781 (+55)  (Master League II)

Here's the latest update from the eleventh week following the TH12 upgrade.  We managed to max out the Clan Game rewards so I collected another book of heroes as well as some wall rings and some gems.  I had a day to spare this time thanks to a 600 point challenge in the Builder Base - always quick to get,  I'm coming to the end of the Elixir based upgrades for TH12 (2 x Gold Storages to go) so I'll start to focus on upgrading the Grand Warden before putting all that spare Elixir into troop upgrades and walls.

Here's what the base looks like right now.

Current Upgrades in Progress

Wizard Tower - Level 11

Gold Mine  - Level 15

Inferno Tower - Level 4

Gold Storage - Level 13

Bomb Tower - Level 7

Gold Mine - Level 15

Hero Levels

Archer Queen - Level 52 (+1)

Grand Warden - Level 21 (+1)

Barbarian King - Level 50

The sixth builder is already coming in handy.  In general, upgrades for TH12 are about a week.  So that's one extra upgrade per week that I can complete now so it really accelerates the progress.  The Grand Warden has been upgraded to level 21 and I pushed the Archer Queen to Level 52 ahead of the Clan War League that starts this weekend.  I need at least 165 medals for a Hammer of Heroes so we need all the troops available for that event.

All the air defenses are now upgraded to the max (level 10).  I still suffered a couple of 3* defeats from e-drags this week so I'm upgrading the final Inferno Tower to see if I can fend them off.  The wizard towers are still in progress as well and I may bump up the Air Bomb upgrades if I can't stop these attacks.

The e-drag upgrade is still ticking along - that's a 10 day upgrade but it should be finished for the second half of Clan War Leagues.

Builder Base

Trophies : 3074 (-88)

The base redesign has helped although I am now working through a backlog of upgrades as I rushed to get the sixth builder.  The Multi Mortar is now at level 9 and I kicked off a Roaster upgrade to get it to Level 8.

The Baby Dragons are now at Level 17 and I used a Rune of Builder Elixir to kick off the upgrade to level 18.  That will give me mostly maxed out troops for my standard attack which is Baby Dragons (lvl 18), Cannon Carts (lvl 18), Bombers (lvl 12) and Battle Machine (lvl 30).

Builder Base News

There was discussion on You Tube this week about the possibility of an extra Hero being added to the Builder Base.  This part of the game will undergo a major upgrade in the 1H of 2023 and the extra hero could be part of this upgrade.  What sort of hero would you like to see in the Builder Base and what ability would it have?  Leave your thoughts in the comments below.  You can check out the video I mentioned above here.

Tip of the Week

Let's continue our look at troop upgrades for TH12.  We now have five troops prioritized for upgrade at TH12 based on the value that each upgrade represents.  Let's add a sixth to the mix and review the Dragon.

At TH12, the Dragon can be upgraded from Level 6 to 7.  The improvement in stats is shown below:

Damage Per Second (DPS) : 270 + 40 = 310

Hit points (HP) : 3,400 + 500 = 3,900

The total upgrade value points or UVP (increase in DPS + increase HP) = (40 + 500) = 540

This upgrade costs 7,000,000 Elixir or 12,962 per upgrade value point

So where do Dragons fit into the upgrade list?

1.) Dragon  13K / UVP
2.) Giant     24K / UVP
3.) Loons.   41K / UVP
4.) Wizard  185K / UVP
5.) Barb      193K / UVP
6.) Archer   900K / UVP

Yes!  We have a new troop in the top slot based on the value you get for the upgrade.  Dragons are almost twice the value of Giants who get pushed to the number two slot.

1 Level 7 Dragon delivers 310 DPS and has 3,900 Hit Points - however it takes up 20 housing spaces

20 level 9 Barbs deliver 20*38 = 760 DPS and have 20*230 = 4,600 Hit Points

So a group of 20 barbs will do more damage than a Dragon and can take significantly more hits.  Of course, Dragons are not constrained by walls or open to attack from ground defenses so have some advantages.  However, they are vulnerable to air defenses and inferno towers so make sure to take these out with lightening or earthquake spells before hand.

Next week we'll do a review of the PEKKA and see if he can knock the Dragon off the number 1 spot.

Until then

Weekly Update (Mar 24th) Finally - The Sixth Builder!

Town Hall Level 12 - Week 10

Trophies : 2726 (-46) ( (Master League II)

Here's the latest update from the tenth week following the TH12 upgrade.  This week the Clan Games kicked off again and it looks like the rewards are a lot better again this month.  I'm really pleased to see the Book of Heroes back again in the final tier of rewards.  I'm off to a fast start with1,200 points and 4 and a half days to go.  The clan is working on the fourth tier of rewards with 14,750 of the 18,000 required.

Here's what the base looks like right now.

Current Upgrades in Progress

Gold Mine - Level 15 (x2)

Air Defense - Level 10

Wizard Tower - Level 11

Elixir Collector - Level 15

Grand Warden (Level 21)

Yes - that's six builders in all!  At last, I have an extra builder to help out in the Home Village.  Almost all of the Elixir upgrades have been completed now so I'm starting on the Grand Warden.  We're between Clan War Leagues so I'm ok to be without one of the Heroes for a few days.

I have one more Air Defense upgrade in progress and then those are complete as well.  Not a moment too soon as I have been losing trophies this week.  I've suffered 5 3* attacks from some form of zap-drag attack in the last week.  I'm hoping that will improve again once the last air defense is complete.

The Giants are now at Level 9 and I kicked off my own e-drag upgrade to level 3 (that's nearly a 10 day upgrade!).

Builder Base

Trophies : 3162 (+185)

It's finally done!  The Battle Machine upgrade to Level 30 completed this week and I sent the Master Builder over to the home village to help out there.

As a reminder, when I started this blog 10 weeks ago, the Battle Machine was at Level 21.  So that's about a level a week (without using magic items).

You'll also notice a bit of a base redesign and I've been able to upgrade a couple of defenses this week.  This has resulted in a big jump in Trophies to 3,162.

Next on the upgrade list is the Multi Mortar to level 9 and Baby Dragons to Level 17.  I'll get the Baby Dragons to Level 18 before getting the Builder Barracks to Level 11 and unlocking the Hog Gliders.

Tip of the Week

Let's continue our look at troop upgrades for TH12.  We now have four troops prioritized for upgrade at TH12 based on the value that each upgrade represents.  Let's add a fifth to the mix and review the Wizard.

At TH12, the Wizard can be upgraded from Level 8 to 9.  The improvement in stats is shown below:

Damage Per Second (DPS) : 215 + 15 = 230

Hit points (HP) : 210 + 20 = 230

The total upgrade value points or UVP (increase in DPS + increase HP) = (15 + 20) = 35

This upgrade costs 6,500,000 Elixir or 185,714 per upgrade value point

So where do Wizards fit into the upgrade list?

1.) Giant     24K / UVP
2.) Loons.   41K / UVP
3.) Wizard  185K / UVP
4.) Barb      193K / UVP
5.) Archer   900K / UVP

So it's sitting in 3rd place in terms of how you should sequence your troop upgrades at this TH level.  Also consider the following:

1 Level 9 Wizard delivers 230 DPS and has 230 Hit Points - however it takes up 4 housing spaces

4 level 9 Barbs deliver 4*38 = 152 DPS and have 4*230 = 920 Hit Points

So a group of 4 barbs will do more damage than a Wizard but can take significantly more hits.  Of course, Wizards are a ranged troop so have some advantages but they are very susceptible to damage so make sure they are well protected if you use them.

Next week we'll do a review of the Dragon and see if he can knock the Giant off the number 1 spot.

Until then

Weekly Update (Mar 17th) Battle Machine Level 30!

Town Hall Level 12 - Week 9

Trophies = 2772 (Master League III)

Here's the latest update from the ninth week following the TH12 upgrade.  It's been a quiet week in the main village with Clan War League completed and no Clan Games.  I did get a bunch of upgrades completed and moved the Barb King to level 50.  This means that all heroes are finally at the max level for TH11 - now we can start on the TH12 hero upgrades!  Here's what the base looks like right now.

Current Upgrades in Progress

Elixir Collector - Level 15

Gold Mine - Level 15

Air Defense - Level 10

Wizard Tower - Level 11

Air Defense - Level 10

I decided to plow ahead and get the other two air defenses completed.  It leaves the base a bit exposed but I have three x-bows and three inferno towers near the center of the base so fingers crossed.  As I'm writing this, the last attack on the base just took place.  7 x level 2 e-drags and 10 x level 7 loons but only a 2* at 76% damage.  Not the strongest attack at this level but at least it wasn't a 3* loss.

Just the one 3* loss this week but again it was level 3 e-drags and level 8 loons that did the damage.  Hopefully when the last of the air defenses is complete, I can put a stop to those.

The Earthquake spell has been upgraded and on the troop front I'm upgrading the Giants to Level 9 based on the research I shared in the blog last week.

Builder Base

Trophies - 2977

In the Builder Base,  I've kicked off the upgrade of the Battle Machine to level 30.  The upgrade only has one day and four hours to go!  This will complete the final step for the sixth builder and I hope to include a video of the final upgrade in next week's blog - stay tuned!

As a reminder the requirements for the sixth builder are:

- Builder Hall to level 9 (Done)

- Gear up 3 defenses in the Home Base (Done)

- Upgrade Cannon Carts to level 18 (Done)

- Upgrade Mega Tesla to level 9 (Done)

- Upgrade Battle Machine to level 30 (upgrading to level 30)

From there, we will take a look at further upgrades as well as some long overdue base redesign to see if we can move up the rankings.

Tip of the Week

Let's continue our look at troop upgrades for TH12.  Last week we I recommended that you consider the Giant early in your upgrade plans when you get to TH12, now let's look at the Balloon (or loon).

At TH12, the Loon can be upgraded from Level 7 to 8.  This change in stats is shown below:

Damage Per Second (DPS) : 198 + 38 = 236

Hit points (HP) : 690 + 150 = 840

The total upgrade value points or UVP (increase in DPS + increase HP) = (38 + 150) = 188

This upgrade costs 7,700,000 Elixir or 40,957 per upgrade value point

So where do Loons fit into the upgrade list?

1.) Giant     24K / UVP
2.) Loons.   41K / UVP
3.) Barb      193K / UVP
4.) Archer   900K / UVP

Quite good value but only half the value of the Giant upgrade that we look at last week.

Also consider the following:

1 Level 8 Loon delivers 236 DPS and has 840 Hit Points - however it takes up 5 housing spaces

5 level 9 Barbs deliver 5*38 = 190 DPS and have 5*230 = 1150 Hit Points

5 level 9 Archers deliver 5*31 = 155 DPS and have 5*56 = 280 Hit Points

So a group of 5 barbs will do nearly as much damage as a Loon but can take more damage.  Of course, they can get held up by walls and don't do well with splash damage so use them strategically.  Level 8 loons work well as clean up troops behind e-drags and be very effective when protected by the Grand Warden (in flight mode) and sped up with rage spells.

Next week we'll do a review of the Wizard and see if he can knock the Giant off the number 1 spot.

Until then

Clash of Clans Journey - Weekly Update (Mar 10th)

Town Hall Level 12 - Week 8

Here's the latest update from the eighth week following the TH12 upgrade.  I received 164 medals from the Clan War League and we managed to stay in Gold League 1.   We suffered a little again as not everyone attacked in each of the battles but I guess that's a common issue in most clans.  I've switched attack strategy for now to e-drag and loons as the loons are now level 8.  It's not such a fun attack strategy so I might switch it up again soon.  Here's what the base looks like right now.

Current Upgrades in Progress

Dark Elixir Storage to Level 7

Wizard Tower to Level 11

Barracks to Level 14 (Unlocks Yeti)

X-Bow to Level 6

Workshop to Level 3 (Unlocks Stone Slammer)

2 of the four air defenses have been upgraded so just 2 more to do.  There have been a couple of 3* attacks on my base this week and both used level 3 e-drags and Level 8 loons.  I'm hoping that the upgrading of the remaining air defenses plus the x-bow upgrade that is under way will be enough to deter them in future.

The bat spell upgrade from last week is complete and I squeezed in an Earthquake spell upgrade as well.  I've just kicked off another Earthquake spell upgrade to get to level 4 as I neglected the spells at the last TH level.

Builder Base

In my village, I've kicked off the upgrade of the Battle Machine to level 29 and it has 21 hours left to go.  The upgrade of the double cannon is complete and I managed to fit in another Fire Cracker build while I was waiting for the Elixir storages to fill.

- Upgrade Battle Machine to level 30 (upgrading to level 29)

There will be a bit of a grind to get the Elixir for the final level 30 upgrade.  However, it should be worth the wait as it finally unlocks the sixth builder!

Tip of the Week

Let's continue our look at troop upgrades for TH12.  Last week we I recommended that you upgrade the Barbarian before the Archer.  Now let's look at the Giants.

At TH12, the Giant can be upgraded from Level 8 to 9.  This change in stats is shown below:

Damage Per Second (DPS) : 62 + 8 = 70

Hit points (HP) : 1500 + 250 = 1850

The total upgrade value points or UVP (increase in DPS + increase HP) = (8 + 250) = 258

This upgrade costs 6,300,000 Elixir or 24,418 per upgrade value point

So where do Giants fit into the upgrade list?

1.) Giant     24K / UVP
2.) Barb      193K / UVP
3.) Archer   900K / UVP

Straight in at the #1 slot (for now).  This upgrade is much better value than the other two we looked at so should be done sooner rather than later.

Also consider the following:

1 Level 9 Giant delivers 70 DPS and has 1850 Hit Points - however it takes up 5 housing spaces

5 level 9 Barbs deliver 5*38 = 190 DPS and have 5*230 = 1150 Hit Points

5 level 9 Archers deliver 5*31 = 155 DPS and have 5*56 = 280 Hit Points

So the Giant will last 1.6 times as long as the archers but does 0.36 the damage.  It would make sense to combine Giants and Barbs at these levels as the base of a good clean up crew for the end of attacks. Level 9 Giants also make up part of the very effective Giant BoWitch strategy that you can see here

Next week we'll keep the focus on the troops that target defensive buildings and see how a Loon upgrade to Level 8 matches up.

Until then

Clash of Clans Journey - Weekly Update (Mar 3rd) Barb vs. Archer? Builder Base Big News!

Town Hall Level 12 - Week 7

Here's the latest update from the seventh week following the TH12 upgrade.  The Barbarian King upgrade is complete and he's ready for the Clan War League!  My Balloon troops have been upgraded and all the rewards from the Clan Games have been collected so the storages are looking pretty healthy right now.  Here's what the base looks like at the moment.

Current Upgrades in Progress

Dark Elixir Drill to Level 9

X-Bow to level 6

Inferno Tower to Level 3

Air Defense to Level 10

Army Camp to Level 10

I've started the air defense upgrades as I mentioned.  Attacks in the last week have been mainly ground based and since the Barb King is back in action, results have improved.  I don't want to have more than one air defense out at a time as I already have an X-Bow and an Inferno tower on upgrade.

Since the Loon upgrade was completed, I kicked off a bat spell upgrade.  It's relatively quick and I need to use some dark elixir without upgrading the heros right now (I need them for the Clan War League).

Builder Base & News

Big news from SuperCell this week!  Level 10 Builder Hall is coming in the next upgrade.  There's also confirmation that we won't lose any progress made in the current base so that's a relief.  Supercell generally publish a major release around April so that's when I think we might see the major changes.

We can also expect to see the end of the three attack limit and perhaps something more similar to the attack mechanism in the home village.  Supercell have also hinted at reducing the number of troops used in the Builder village but given them special abilities, a bit like heroes.  Let me know your thoughts on the changes in the comments.

In my village,  the Battle Machine is now at level 28 so just the 2 levels to go.  However, we've hit a little delay as I'll explain.  I could not pass up the Builder Gold Rune as part of the Clan Games rewards.  As I already had one, I needed to use it to collect the additional rune.  Therefore, I started a double cannon upgrade to empty the gold strorage, used the rune and then collected the additional one from the Games.

We'll have to wait for the double cannon to finish before taking the battle machine to level 29.

- Upgrade Battle Machine to level 30 (Currently at Level 28)

Tip of the Week

Let's continue our look at troop upgrades for TH12.  Last week we reviewed upgrading the barbarian.  Now let's take a look at the Archer and compare the differences.

At TH12, the archer can be upgraded from Level 8 to 9.  This change in stats is shown below:

Damage Per Second (DPS) : 28 + 3 = 31

Hit points (HP) : 52 + 4 = 56

The total upgrade value points or UVP (increase in DPS + increase HP) = (3 + 4) = 7

This upgrade costs 6,300,000 Elixir or 900,000 per upgrade value point

In addition, the archer comes with the following capabilities:

- Targets anything
- Attacks single targets
- Ground & Air attack
- Housing space = 1
- Movement speed = 24

So should you upgrade Barbarians to level 9 before archers?

Archer    900K per UVP
Barb       193K per UVP

Level 9 Barb : DPS = 38 / HP = 230
Level 9 Arch : DPS = 31 / HP = 56

YES! - The archer has some advantages over the barbarian but the difference in value that you get from upgrading the barbarian is much greater.  Make sure to pair it with some wall breakers to get access to compartments when needed.

Check out this mass barb attack by Judo Sloth using Level 8 barbs.

Access the Barbarian Super Troop for even more power and then you can use this Super Barb attack strategy that Kenny Jo demonstrates here

Next week we'll take a look at the Giant upgrade at TH12.  This is the first of the troops that take multiple housing spaces so we'll do some calculations to see how it stacks up.

Until then
